TOP TIPS FOR WORKING FROM HOME
|
Don't rush in. Becoming a homeworker is no different from any other career option. It should not be a "knee-jerk" reaction to
receiving a bill you cannot pay as this desperate frame of mind can cause you to jump at anything rather
than choosing something that will genuinely suit you and your skill level.
Don't pay for work. If someone is offering you a job rather than the opportunity to set up your own business, eg
assembly or admin work, do not consider any offers that request payment. It will almost certainly be a scam. See our scams page
for more details of various homeworking scams
Don't expect high pay for unskilled work. Local companies may offer home based piece work but they are usually badly
paid, generally only reaching minimum wage once you've had a lot of practice. When you start you
are likely to be much slower and will earn very little. Any company claiming to offer huge pay rates
for basic unskilled work is either a scam (see our employment scams page for the most common admin scams) or is not offering employment but some form of performance related
commission/referral program.
Don't believe the hype. Get rich quick schemes do not work. The only people who make money from these
are the people who set them up, and those who are able to get in early and con loads of others into joining
before the whole thing crashes.
Don't think that homeworking is an easy option. Most homeworkers work very hard and you should expect
to work harder than if you were working in a traditional office/shop based job.
Don't underestimate the amount of work required to get started. Many people consider homeworking when they are
pregnant but babies and work do not mix well especially in the early stages when you are adjusting to motherhood.
Don't expect to start earning a regular income immediately. Unless you have an employer and are able
to transfer your existing office based job to a telecommuting position, it takes time to generate a steady
solid income as a homeworker. Even if you aren't working for yourself, most home based work is performance related.
Consider your own strengths. Most successful homeworkers find work relating to their interests or skills.
This could be, for example, by selling your own creations, selling your services or simply creating a website to
write about something you love.

Do your research. Is there a market for your work? Are there any regulations relating to your chosen field
of work?
Do take advice. Check out local groups in your area and visit relevant online forums. Whatever you are
trying to do, you can be sure someone else has been there and will be able to help.
Don't Give Up. When you work from home, you almost certainly won't be getting a steady pay cheque at the end of ever month.
It takes time to become established and you can have good and bad months even when you've been operating for years.
Working from home can be as much about lifestyle choice as earning money and it is worth the effort.
