With hundreds of thousands of people worldwide earning a full time income with eBay, online auctions are
probably one of the easiest and cheapest ways to make money online. Wherever you live in the world you can sell
online and you can either get rid of all your unwanted items or pick up items for
reselling, but you don't even need to own or pay for the goods in advance. This section shows you how to get
started.
GETTING STARTED
Online auction sites are a great way to find a
bargain on practically anything and an excellent
way of getting the best price for selling something
of your own. Online auctions are very different
from their real-world counterparts. You are free to
take your time browsing the listings and bidding
takes place over a period of days rather than
minutes. There's also a good deal of terminology
associated with online auctions which you'll need
to get to grips with.
Should you decide to place a bid or put an item
up for sale, you will usually be required to
register with the site. Some sites will ask you for
your credit card details at this point for
identification purposes. You will also be agreeing
to the site's terms and conditions which you should
ensure you fully understand and accept. Bidding is
usually free while selling will often command a
listing fee for starting the auction and a closing
fee on the successful sale of your item. These
charges vary from site to site.
Some of the terms used at online auctions can be
confusing for beginners but knowing what they mean
is essential if you want to take part. Here's an
explanation of the most common terms you'll come
across. You may find that some auction sites use
slightly different terminology but with the same
meaning. The most common alternatives are also
listed.
Bid Increment - The amount by which a
buyer must exceed the current price to become the
high bidder. This amount is determined by the
current price and varies between auction sites.
Bid Retraction - The bidder cancels his
own bid. Most sites will only allow you to do this
in exceptional circumstances, if at all.
Bid Shilling - Fraudulent bidding by the
seller (using an alternate account) or an associate
of the seller in order to inflate the price of an
item.
Dutch Auction - An auction where the
seller has multiple identical items to sell to
multiple winners. The final per-item price is
usually determined by the lowest of the winning
bids.
Escrow Service - A third party which will
protect the interests of both the buyer and the
seller. The buyer first sends payment to the third
party. The seller is then informed that payment has
arrived and sends the item directly to the buyer.
After the item has been delivered to, and accepted
by the buyer, payment is released to the seller.
Many auction sites provide their own escrow
service. If not, use only services they recommend, not one suggested by the buyer.
Feedback - Publicly-available ratings and
comments that buyers and sellers provide on each
other. Most sites only allow you to provide
feedback on a user with whom you've completed a
transaction in order to give a more accurate
profile.
High Bidder - The buyer who placed the
bid which would win the auction if it were to close
immediately.
Maximum Bid (or Threshold) - The maximum
amount the buyer is willing to pay for an item.
This amount is not revealed to other users and is
normally used in proxy bidding. Also called
threshold.
Minimum Bid (also Starting Bid) The
smallest amount that can be entered as a bid for a
particular auction as set by the seller. Note that,
in addition to this, there may also be a reserve
price on the item.
Proxy Bidding (or Automatic Bidding) An
option whereby the site automatically increases the
buyer's current bid for the item over any
subsequent bids placed by other users by the lowest
possible amount necessary (accounting for bid
increments) to maintain the buyer as the high
bidder until the buyer's maximum bid is reached.
Also called automatic bidding.
Reserve Price - The minimum price the
buyer will accept for the item. This amount is not
usually disclosed.
Sniping - Placing a winning bid just
before an auction closes. You can use automated tools like AuctionSniper to do this.
This is a tactic used to
prevent other bidders from outbidding the "sniper"
or driving the price higher. Some auction sites
will allow a minimum time (perhaps five minutes)
without bidding activity before the auction close -
pushing back the closing time if necessary. You can
also use proxy bidding to combat sniping where
available.
WARNING - Be wary when selling if buyer asks to use any escrow
company other than those recommended by eBay, or any other unusual
transaction, often involving bank drafts for amounts higher than the cost of
the transaction. These are common scams using fraudulent 3rd parties
or counterfeit documentation.

DROPSHIPMENT
Drop Shipping is used by middlemen and mail
order firms who do not wish to stock inventory of
the products sold for future delivery through mail
order, catalogues and internet advertising.
Middlemen send single unit orders for products to
manufacturers, or major stocking distributors, who
in turn drop ship the merchandise direct to the
customers of the middlemen. Manufacturers providing
drop shipping services can gain additional sales,
shift advertising costs to middlemen, offer
advertising material and reduce inventory
requirements. Middlemen who initiate drop ship
orders shift the risks of stocking inventory to the
supply source, including storage, insurance,
overhead, and personnel by spending nothing on
inventory, until after the product is sold.
For example: Let's say you ran across a Crystal
Ball on a dropshipping site for £20.00. You would sell
that Crystal Ball for a price you would determine,
let's use £35.00 plus £4.50 shipping for an example.
After you collect the payment of £39.50 from the
customer and their mailing address, you would
forward the £20.00 plus £4.50 shipping to the supplier,
and keep the £15.00 as profit, never having to
touch the Product, as the supplier ships it out
to the customer.
If you want to know more about dropshipping then take a look at The Dropship Forum
where dropshippers of all sizes come together to talk about dropshipping, and share their experiences.
You can also find out about dropship sources; getting recommendations of good companies and find out which to avoid.
UK WHOLESALE AND DISCOUNT SOURCES
If you're looking to buy stock in bulk cheaply for resale yourself
through online auctions or other methods, the following resources
and sites are recommended:
Make profits on eBay by selling DVDs and games. With this new guide you can
discover secret wholesale sources so you can go direct and buy DVDs, videos, games
and CDs from the cheapest sources in the UK. Most wholesalers do not require
you to buy in bulk nor do you need to live near one. Ordering is mainly via
telephone or online.
This 34 page ebook also shows you how to set up a business and make money using your
computer by selling the cheap DVDs and games on eBay. This guide is written by
someone who actually operates this business. Not only does it cover the trade
wholesalers and the methods and formulas required
to set up your successful business, it also gives you plenty of added value by
writing about how he got started in business and the essential shortcuts to
becoming super-successful.
This book has been universally praised by those who have invested in it and
is easily the most comprehensive publication available on this subject.
Here's what Peter Bryn Morgan had to say about the guide: I subscribed a couple of years back when I was off long term sick just for
something to do really. I read an E Book you advertised on selling DVDs on Ebay.
Anyway a long story short I am now running a full time business turning over
£500k a year near enough and making more money than ever before and am in the
process of taking on my first member of staff (already employed my girlfriend P/T)
And if you're in any doubt about the authenticity of his claim just visit his ebay
website to see just how many items he's sold.

CELEBRITY
AUTOGRAPHS
One of the best areas to get started in, is that
of celebrity autographs. You can either contact the
stars direct or simply buy up items at auction and
sell again, hopefully at a profit at a later date.
The advantages here are that the items take up very
little room even when you've built up quite a
collection, many can be picked up for little more
than an SAE, and on a slightly morbid note, nobody
lives forever so at some point in time the supply
will run dry.
You may be surprised to learn that many
celebrities will send you their autograph free of
charge but you do have to go about it the right
way, and of course you need to have the current
address. The best source of addresses I've found is
provided by
Celebrity
Addresses Online who have a database of over
13,500 accurate and complete addresses of movie,
television, music, and sports stars, as well as
politicians, models, authors, directors, artists,
world leaders, religious figures, fashion
designers, reporters, scientists, adult film stars,
Olympians, Nobel Prize Winners, and many more
public figures. They are also the premiere source
for International celebrity addresses.
They are also believed to be the ONLY source in
the world that offers their exclusive Celebrity
Address Lists LIVE on the Internet. Where other
sites post addresses that are years old, theirs are
updated daily, in real time! They use a network of
researchers who continually update our databases.
Plus 100% Satisfaction Guarantees...
They'll refund you fifty-cents for every returned envelope - just send the fronts
back to them!
If you're not completely happy with the service, just let them know within 90 days
for a full and prompt refund.

Alternatively, take a look at Autographs of the World. Autographs Of The World are one of the biggest and
most reputable autograph stoockists in the UK and as such they do not stock any facsimile, printed or
unsigned products - all autographs stocked are rare and authentic. They are able to supply you with soccer, sports, music, TV
and historical autographs.
UK AUCTION
SITES
Some of these sites are only lightly used,
especially by bidders, enabling you to pick up
bargains to sell elsewhere.
Auctionzone.co.uk - Lightly used site.
Extra credit checks made to eliminate fraud.
AutobyAuction.co.ukPlace your car in its own UK wide auction at no
risk or cost to you. You only pay if you sell. or,
pay a Placement Fee so people can call you direct
for you to sell your car, and pay nothing else. It
is easy to bid for and buy the car you like, at the
bargain price which suits you, in an on-line
auction.Obviously unlike other auctions, as
a car puchase requires additional examination,
these auctions cannot be binding but are merely a
way of introducing buyer to seller.
buyit.co.uk -
Quiet UK auction site. Free listings.
Christie's
Auction House - Search catalogues and leave
absentee bids on items in their auctions around the
world.
http://www.classic-auctions.co.uk International specialist auction house in veteran, vintage,
pre-war, thoroughbred and classic cars, motorcycles and Automobilia
www.CQout.com - One of a few
possible alternatives to eBay. The last time I looked there were over 100,000 items listed.
No listing fees and lower commission fees than eBay.
Cyberbid.co.uk/ - No fees but currently too quiet
to be much use for sellers. May find a bargain if you're looking to buy.
- UK version of the biggest auction site, with
a sector specifically for business equipment.
eBid
- One of the more active UK sites, offering
escrow payments and insurance to reduce the risk to
both parties of a deal. No listing fees.
Eurobid.com
-multilingual European site with the option to get
your own personalized, free and full auction
service! No listing fees
Friday-Auction
- Named after the print version which is published on a Friday, auctions
aren't restricted to Fridays. Plenty of goods on
offer but little bidding when I looked. May be
better suited to picking up bargains, rather than
selling at present, unless you are prepared to do
your own additional advertising. Nominal listing
fees, but you do get £20 credit when you
register (free of charge).
SellYourItem -
New UK Auction Site. Register Free and receive a £10 Free
credit in your account. List your Auction items, host your own images or
Bid to buy great new and used goods.
US AUCTION
SITES
Without doubt, the biggest and the best is
the one the others measure themselves against. If
you only use one site this has to be the one. In
addition to the US site they also have sites around
the world.
When you hear "eBay" and "money" in the same sentence
your probably think of becoming an eBay seller.
You place product listings in the eBay marketplace, buyers bid, you pay your
eBay seller fees and what you have left is your profit margin.
There is, however, another way to build a business which still revolves around
eBay but which doesn’t involve you selling a single thing in the eBay
marketplace.
This "other way" opportunity is based on the eBay affiliate program
and a great tool which makes entry into this opportunity not only
possible but also super easy. This tool is called "Build
A Niche Store".
Now if you don’t know – an affiliate program enables you as an
individual internet entrepreneur to promote the products of a company in exchange
for a commission on all sales that you refer.
You are basically operating as an internet middleman and connecting internet
browsers to particular products and companies through you own network of websites
and marketing methods.
If we return to the eBay affiliate program, eBay actually invites you to
promote all of the product listings in the eBay marketplace and in exchange
for your efforts will pay you up to 75% of the revenue they make from each
sale you refer plus up to $35 for each new active eBay member you refer.
What this means is that you can earn up to three quarters of eBay’s
revenue simply for connecting people to the products listed in the eBay marketplace.
Not only do you get to partner with the best branded marketplace in the world,
you also get access to and control over ALL of the products listed in this
marketplace. The eBay product inventory becomes YOUR product inventory and
yet you do NOT have to stock items, deal with customers, organize shipping
or process refunds.
You are no longer limited to selling only those products which you can buy
and sell for a profit margin. You can choose ANY niche market and promote
those eBay products relevant to your chosen niche outside of the eBay marketplace,
funnelling targeted traffic through to eBay and into your own affiliate commissions.
Golf clubs, sewing kits, laptops, dog collars, diamond rings, Florida real
estate…
If you know eBay you know how BIG it is – there are NO limits.
At this point you might be thinking - well this sounds interesting but in
reality is there any money in it? Well, here’s the shocker – eBay's
top affiliates make over 1 million dollars a month. That’s right –
8 figures a year without stocking, selling or shipping a single thing!
Now eBay does provide some basic free tools to help you succeed as an eBay
affiliate and build an affiliate business BUT it has been the development
of a tool outside of eBay that has really opened this up as a legitimate business
opportunity.
The tool, as I mentioned earlier, is called "Build
A Niche Store" and what it enables you to do is build eBay affiliate
websites targeted to any eBay niche you want. These act as the medium through
which you funnel targeted visitors to eBay.
Here are a couple of examples, one targeting Race Cars and the other Golf
Equipment:
As you can see, these are professional looking websites that contain all
of those eBay products related to their target niche inside a searchable store
format, each of which automatically contains your eBay affiliate id.
These stores then automatically update as new products are listed for sale
and old listing expire from the eBay marketplace and the software has built
in development features which enable you to create new store pages, add content
to these pages, create content pages, modify your template etc etc.
Basically, in the space of about 10 minutes (once you are familiar with how
the software works) you can create a fully functional eBay affiliate website
targeted to the niche market of your choice.
Your store content is all search engine friendly which will provide the foundation
for attracting targeted traffic from the search engines and you can then use
the development features to attract more targeted visitors which will in turn
mean more eBay affiliate commissions.
It really is a brilliant concept and I’ve been hearing great things
about the guys behind the project and the member forum which you get lifetime
access to when you purchase the product.
Build A Niche Store comes with a step by step user manual which will walk
even the most technically inexperienced through setting up their eBay affiliate
website, 9 professional template layouts which can be customized (from inside
your admin panel) to match your target niche, lifetime member forum access,
comprehensive product support and possibly most importantly – an UNLIMITED
domain license which means you can build as many of these niche websites as
you want for the small one time fee.
Think about how many niches eBay caters to!
How big could your eBay affiliate business be?!
This product gets my full recommendation – check it out today…

Making Big Money with eBay
If you've been tempted to trying selling items on eBay and the other auction sites,
you've probably come across a host of books and ebooks written for the US market
that don't really apply to UK buyers, or help you as a seller to source supplies,
and are often simply repeating the information given on eBay itself, or too full
of jargon to be of any use to a beginner. This month however sees the release of
a brand new manual written in plain English with contributions from eBay achievers
throughout the UK who explain how they
built successful home-based eBay businesses and tell you how you can do the same.
Also included is previously unpublished information on where to get your
hands on a constant supply of in-demand brand new products, both low and high tech,
for which you pay nothing until you've made the sale
and been paid yourself, and which require no storage or handling yourself.
As an added bonus the guide comes with resale rights and includes personalised
promotional literature for your marketing. All sales are handled by the publisher - you just forward the orders you receive for processing.
Usually priced at £20 plus 6 first class stamps, visitors to this site can forget the stamps and pay just
£20. You'll find payment details on http://www.homeworkinguk.com/ebayguide.htm
Written by a self-confessed eBay freak, Jim Cockrum, who has been selling
on eBay for nearly 4 years, this new eBook teaches you how to
acquire and sell a product on eBay that is nearly or totally
free to you, available in unlimited supply, and is very
resistant to competition.
In this book he shows you one of his eBay accounts
- you'll see exactly how this system works! He has
all perfect feedback on my eBay accounts. I've never found
another eBay book that shows you an actual eBay account with real feedback!
Here are the facts about Silent Sales Machines:
Silent Sales Machines are free to start. They run with little or no maintenance.
They can be "turned on" in less than 30 minutes in some cases, and are not MLM (but you could really use this idea to explode any MLM or Network Marketing program).
They are legal, are ethical, are EVERYWHERE waiting for someone to "turn them on", they don't violate any eBay policies, and they are perpetual (they don't quit).
You could literally be making money from these ideas 30 minutes from now if you are already selling on eBay.
You can actually make money on eBay auctions that don't get ANY bids.
With very little effort you can earn cash from the efforts of others on eBay - and they'll thank you for it!
Take a look at Jim's site and in addition to full details about his guide, you'll find copies of his paypal
accounts, showing his eBay activity together with some of the most impressive testimonials ever seen, such as:

I ordered the "Silent Sales Machine" book and would like to give credit when it's due. I sincerely appreciate the advice you gave in it. Auction
Directory: A growing auction and auction related
site directory, now with user reviews. Now over
400 listings.
Auctiontalk provides daily news on the
auction industry, featured articles by auctioneers
and collectors, auction company stock quotes,
discussion boards on many auction related topics.
Also, a chat area is provided for buyers, sellers,
collectors, and auction experts to share
information and experiences.
ManageAuctions offers inventory
management, bulk listing, image hosting, counter
and stats services, and a set of special services
for managing your "sold" auctions. After you
receive a "congratulations" message from an auction
site, you still have a lot of work to do: notifying
the winning bidder, keeping track when the payment
is received and when the item is shipped, and
having some further email communications with the
bidder. And there is more work to do if the
transaction process does not go very smoothly.
ManageAuctions helps you with all of this
and more!
